Stretches for skiing
How Yoga Can Help You Ski Stronger, Move Better and Enjoy the Mountains?

For many of us, a ski holiday is one of the highlights of the year. The excitement of fresh mountain air, stunning scenery and long days exploring the slopes is hard to beat.
Skiing is one of our passions at My Life Tonic, and every year we look forward to returning to the mountains. But like any activity that challenges the body, a little preparation can make a big difference to how you feel on the slopes.
This is where yoga and skiing work beautifully together.
At first glance, they may seem like very different activities, but they share many similarities. Both require focus, awareness, controlled breathing and the ability to adapt to your surroundings.
In yoga, we talk about Drishti—focused attention—and Pranayama—controlled breathing. These same principles apply when skiing: staying present, looking ahead, managing your breath and responding to changes in terrain.
By the end of a yoga practice or a day skiing, you often experience that wonderful feeling of being physically tired but mentally refreshed.
About us
Using Yoga to Prepare for Skiing
A ski holiday can place significant demands on your body. Strong legs, a stable core, good balance and mobile joints all help you feel more confident on the slopes.

Yoga can support your preparation by helping to:
- Build core strength for improved balance and stability.
- Strengthen the legs, particularly the quads and glutes.
- Improve shoulder mobility for carrying skis and poles.
- Increase flexibility to help your body move more freely.
Even if you haven't started preparing months in advance, it's never too late to introduce movement into your routine. A few weeks of focused yoga and strength work before your trip can help you feel more ready for your time in the mountains.
A Yoga Warm-Up Before You Hit the Slopes
Just like you would warm up before running or another sport, preparing your body before skiing can help get your muscles and joints ready for action.
Dynamic yoga sequences such as Sun Salutations are a great way to increase circulation and gently wake up the body.
Adding movement into poses such as Chair Pose can help activate the legs and core—try gently pulsing up and down, shifting from side to side, before settling deeper into the pose.
A few minutes of mindful movement before your first run can help you feel more connected, balanced and ready for the day ahead.

Recovery Yoga After Skiing
After hours on the slopes, your muscles deserve some attention too.
Simple stretches such as:
- Spinal twists to release tension through the back.
- Pigeon pose to open the hips and glutes.
- Forward folds to relax the back of the legs.
...can help ease stiffness and support recovery.
Hold each pose for several breaths, breathing slowly through your nose and allowing your body time to relax. Remember, yoga isn't about pushing further—it's about listening to your body and creating space to recover.
Whether you're preparing for your next ski holiday, heading back to the mountains or simply looking to improve your movement and mobility, yoga can be the perfect companion.
Move well. Breathe deeply. Enjoy every turn.
Every Monday night at 7pm, we run a 45 minute SkiFit class which cost £8 for an online drop in. Give it a try to make sure your body is ready to hit the slopes this winter!
