Our Aberdyfi Life Tonic
A Few Days in West Wales: Our Aberdyfi Life Tonic

Sometimes you don't need a big adventure or an exotic destination to press reset. Sometimes you just need a few days somewhere beautiful, good friends, plenty of fresh air and a reason to get outside.
For us, that meant a few days in Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) in West Wales, on the edge of Snowdonia, with dear friends and their family. We've been to Aberdyfi before, including when the Welsh weather hasn't exactly been on our side, but this time we were particularly lucky. Sunshine made it possible to make the most of everything the area has to offer — and reminded us how much of a tonic being outdoors can be.
Moving, playing and trying something new
One of the things we love about getting away with friends is that being active doesn't have to mean exercise. It can simply mean playing.
At Aberdyfi Recreation Ground, there are bowls, mini golf, tennis and pickleball. We chose bowls, which became considerably more competitive than anticipated! There was plenty of laughter, a bit of friendly rivalry and, most importantly, no one was worrying about how many steps they had done.

For those who prefer their activity with a little more challenge, Aberdyfi also has a fantastic links golf course. The Aberdyfi Golf Club course is beautiful, coastal and definitely challenging — proof that sometimes the best way to move your body is to do something you enjoy with other people.

A waterfall and a cold-water reset
One of our favourite adventures was finding a waterfall and natural pool tucked away in the countryside.
Starting from the Mary Jones Memorial, the walk takes around 30 minutes. Follow the road up the valley, past the house on your right, until the road becomes unmade. Look for the gate and footbridge on the right. Cross the bridge, turn left and follow the route towards the trees and rocks before making your way down towards the stream.
And then you find it — a beautiful waterfall and pool hidden amongst the trees.
Naturally, we couldn't discover a gorgeous natural swimming spot without getting in.
Cold-water exposure has become one of our favourite ways to challenge ourselves and reconnect with the body. This particular dip was cold, but taking that moment to stop, breathe and immerse ourselves in nature felt incredibly invigorating. There's something about cold water that forces you to be completely present — no phones, no distractions, just breath and sensation.
It wasn't comfortable. But perhaps that's part of the point.

A little history along the way
On the way back, we stopped at Castell y Bere, the ruins of a castle built around 1220. The ancient walls and dramatic setting are fascinating in themselves, but we particularly enjoyed learning about the importance of livestock as a source of wealth in medieval Wales.
It was a reminder that exploring somewhere new doesn't have to mean ticking off major attractions. Sometimes it's simply about stopping, looking around and learning something you didn't know before.
From lakes to beaches

Another lovely stop was Gwesty Tynycornel Hotel, where we enjoyed great food overlooking the stunning lake. It was one of those moments where there was nowhere else we needed to be — just good food, beautiful scenery and good company.
And then there was the beach.
Aberdyfi's wonderfully sandy beach has plenty of space to find your own spot, whether you want to swim, paddle, walk through the dunes or simply lie in the sunshine.
We also had a go at jetty jumping — only when the tide was high enough and with someone else, of course — and spent some time crabbing from the jetty, which is always a winner when younger members of the family are involved.
And, inevitably, there were ice creams.
What makes a good Life Tonic?
This trip reminded us that wellbeing isn't always about routines, supplements or structured exercise. Sometimes it's about doing something new, moving your body, getting outside, challenging yourself, eating good food and laughing with people you love.
It's about cold water when you don't really want to get in. A walk when you could have stayed on the sofa. Trying bowls when you've never played before.
Exploring an ancient castle. Sitting beside a lake with friends. Watching the kids crab from the jetty. And ending the day with an ice cream.
That's our kind of Life Tonic.
And perhaps that's what we loved most about Aberdyfi. Whether the Welsh weather gives you sunshine or rain, there's an opportunity to get outside, try something different and reconnect with the things that make you feel good.
Good people. Good movement. Good food. Nature. Adventure. A little discomfort. And plenty of laughter.
Sometimes, that's all the reset you need.
