GETTING AWAY WORKS

Why Getting Away Matters: Reconnecting Through Shared Experiences

Life has a habit of filling every available space.

Work deadlines, household jobs, social commitments, family responsibilities and the endless list of things that need our attention can quickly become the focus of our days. Before we know it, weeks or even months have passed without taking any meaningful time for ourselves or the people closest to us.

That's why we believe that getting away, even for a short break, can be one of the most valuable investments we make in our wellbeing.

Recently, we spent a couple of days in London doing something we both enjoy – geetting a change of scene, exploring and spending quality time together.

There was no strict itinerary. No pressure to tick off a list of attractions.

Just time to enjoy experiences, conversations and each other's company.

One of the highlights was a meal at Llama, tucked away within the Hoxton Hotel. Great food has a wonderful way of kick start a fun evening. Sitting down, sharing dishes and enjoying a leisurely meal creates the space for conversations that often get squeezed out of everyday life.

We also spent time wandering around Tate Modern, taking in the exhibitions and allowing ourselves to slow down and appreciate creativity from a different perspective. Art, isnt something either of 'do' but it has a way of making us pause, reflect and sometimes see things differently.

Movement was naturally part of the trip too. A yoga class at Triyoga Shoreditch provided the opportunity to stretch, breathe and reconnect with our bodies after a busy few weeks.

It wasn't about pushing ourselves or achieving anything. It was simply about feeling good and a wonderful way to start our Sunday morning.

Obviously we found a local artisan coffee afterwards...

One experience that particularly stood out was spending time at a @rooftopsaunas and cold tub experience in Hackney. Moving between heat and cold, overlooking the city skyline, created a real sense of presence. It was one of those moments where you stop thinking about everything else and simply focus on where you are.

Perhaps the most valuable part of the trip, though, was the time spent wandering.

Exploring Shoreditch, browsing independent and vintage shops, stopping for coffee and following whatever looked interesting at the time. There was no rush and no particular destination. Just the opportunity to be curious and enjoy the experience.

These moments may seem small, but they remind us of something we talk about regularly through My Life Tonic: wellbeing doesn't always come from adding more.

  • Sometimes it comes from creating space.
  • Space to connect.
  • Space to explore.
  • Space to move.
  • Space to rest.
  • Space to enjoy the things that make life feel richer.

As a couple, it's easy to get caught up in routines and responsibilities.

Taking time away, even for a day or two, helps strengthen connections, create shared memories and remind us why spending quality time together matters.

You don't need an expensive holiday or weeks away from work to experience the benefits. It might be a day trip, a walk somewhere new, a shared meal, a yoga class, a visit to a gallery or simply an afternoon without a schedule.

The activity itself is often less important than the intention behind it.

Making time for the people, places and experiences that help us feel good.

At My Life Tonic, we often talk about small changes having a big impact on wellbeing. Taking time away from our normal routine is one of those changes.

Not because it solves everything.

But because it helps us return feeling refreshed, reconnected and better equipped to navigate everyday life.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for our wellbeing is simply step away from the usual routine and make time for what matters most.
